Diwali 2004

Diwali 2004 was one of the most successful community events we have organised at Woodberry Down in recent years.

Taking place on Friday 12 November, the start of Diwali 2004, our celebrations comprised:

- a performance of a new musical 'Diwali' telling the story of Rama and Sita

- a Diwali party

Diwali or the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by both Sikhs and Hindus, but for different reasons. Diwali is celebrated between October and November.

For Hindus, the festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

For Sikhs, Diwali symbolises freedom of conscience to practice ones faith, respect for other beliefs and the fight against persecution. illuminated with candles and lamps.

Common to both Hindu and Sikh Diwali are the lighting of lamps, firework displays, sweets and presents. Dancing and singing are often part of the celebrations and a funfair a Diwali Mela. Circus acts, such as jugglers and clowns perform feats and tiredness does not stop the celebrations from continuing well into the night!

Our Diwali party drew on some of the key elements of Diwali and the evening was highly memorable. We would like to thank all the parents, school staff and other volunteers who gave up their time to make this event a success. We would also like to thank the circus skills club staff for enabling the children to perform. Other thanks go to Miss Penzer (for directing the play) and Miss Yuen (for organising the party).

Professionally fired fireworks display by Jonathons Fireworks.
