Ofsted June 2003

The school's Ofsted report from June 2003 contains many really encouraging comments. For example:

Many pupils are making rapid progress and making up lost ground in English and mathematics.

Teaching is consistently good, and sometimes better, in Year 6.

Support staff are usually well deployed and make a positive contribution to the learning of pupils with special educational needs.

Moral development is a strong feature of the school’s provision. Social and cultural development are good.

The school provides good personal care for its pupils in a friendly atmosphere where all pupils can feel happy and secure. Good procedures for assessment in English and mathematics are helping to identify the focus for improvement.

The leadership of the headteacher and senior staff is good. Together they have set expectations for the school’s development

Senior staff use assessment information well to check performance and all members of staff are involved in identifying areas for development in subject action plans

Throughout the school, pupils’ attitudes, values and relationships are satisfactory. Often they are good in response to the good overall provision for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Pupils are encouraged to have thoughtful and positive attitudes. Most pupils are keen and eager to learn.

Behaviour in the school is mainly good, expectations are high and, overall, pupils respond well. The very good behaviour policy contains clear guidelines which are applied consistently and fairly. Pupils value the ‘golden time’, which they can earn for good work and good behaviour. There are clear strategies for dealing with bullying, which is not really an issue in the school.

Pupils from all backgrounds and cultures develop harmonious relationships in lessons and at play.

Relationships in the school are good. Mutual respect is encouraged, as is respect for each individual, both pupils and adults. Adults are good role models. Pupils are given responsibilities...

Pupils have raised substantial funds for those less fortunate, both nationally and internationally...

…There has been real and measurable improvement (in pupil's attendance)...very good work and rigorous monitoring carried out by the home-school worker.

The school’s provision for moral development is very good. It gives it a high status and sees it as the basis for improving the school ethos and the quality of the environment for learning.

‘Talk to your partner’ provides a powerful drive and is an integral part of many lessons and is used effectively in school assemblies. Pupils have taken to this strategy with zeal and understanding.

This is a large, well-kept, open site with little evidence of litter or graffiti and constant attention is given to pupils’ security. Seven members of staff have received first-aid training and there is adequate first-aid equipment around the school.

The Foundation Stage co-ordinator has made a significant impact on developments in the nursery since her appointment at the start of the year.
